Otolith microconstituent analysis of juvenile blue®n tuna (Thunnus thynnus) from the Mediterranean Sea and Paci®c Ocean

چکیده
Microconstituents were measured in otoliths of juvenile northern blue®n tuna (Thunnus thynnus) from the Mediterranean Sea and western Paci®c Ocean. Whole otoliths were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Multivariate statistical analysis showed clear separation between the two groups. Na, Mg, Mn, and Zn were most useful in differentiating Mediterranean and Paci®c samples. Findings justify further use of otolith microconstituents to investigate stock structure questions concerning Atlantic blue®n tuna. # 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Origin of Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) in the Bay of Biscay
Weused carbon and oxygen isotope ratios (dC and dO) in otoliths as a tool for identifying the nursery origin of Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) caught in the eastern North Atlantic Ocean (Bay of Biscay). Juvenile and adult bluefin tuna were collected over three consecutive years (2009—2011) using the regional bait boat fleet. Otolith dC and dO values of bluefin tuna were measured by mas...
متن کاملEvidence of trans-Atlantic movement and natal homing of bluefin tuna from stable isotopes in otoliths
Stable carbon and oxygen isotopes in the otoliths of Atlantic bluefin tuna Thunnus thynnus were used to investigate trans-Atlantic movement and natal homing behaviors. Otolith δ13C and δ18O of yearling bluefin tuna from 6 different year classes (1999 to 2004) were characterized to validate the approach and assess inter-annual variation in these markers for individuals from eastern (Mediterranea...
متن کاملEnvironmental noise in spawning areas: the case of Atlantic Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus thynnus)
We here present an exploratory analysis aiming to seek whether the colour of environmental noise theory could help in understanding the intriguing reproductive strategy of Atlantic bluefin tuna (BFT). A frequency-based approach based on spectral exponents, f with <0, is chosen and applied on 10 biogeographical provinces covering the North Atlantic. The major BFT spawning area, i.e. the Mediter...
متن کاملMetazoan gill parasites of the Atlantic bluefin tuna Thunnus thynnus (Linnaeus) (Osteichthyes: Scombridae) from the Mediterranean and their possible use as biological tags.
The gills of 63 specimens of the Atlantic bluefin tuna Thunnus thynnus (Linnaeus) (Osteichthyes: Scombridae) from three localities of the Mediterranean (Sardinian, Tyrrhenian and Levantine Seas) were examined for metazoan parasites. The parasite fauna of T. thynnus from the Sea of Sardinia included 11 species: five didymozoid trematodes, three capsalid and one hexostomid monogeneans, and one ca...
متن کاملElectronic Tagging of Atlantic Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus thynnus, L.) Reveals Habitat Use and Behaviors in the Mediterranean Sea
We analyzed the movements of Atlantic tuna (Thunnus thynnus L.) in the Mediterranean Sea using data from 2 archival tags and 37 pop-up satellite archival tags (PAT). Bluefin tuna ranging in size from 12 to 248 kg were tagged on board recreational boats in the western Mediterranean and the Adriatic Sea between May and September during two different periods (2000 to 2001 and 2008 to 2012).
